ADHD and neurodivergent friendly GP care
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. It can cause difficulties in paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD can have a significant impact on daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life for those who are diagnosed with it. As such, proper management and treatment of ADHD is crucial for individuals with this condition.
One of the common challenges faced by neurodivergent patients, particularly those with ADHD, is the extended wait times for review appointments with their healthcare providers. This waiting period can be a source of immense stress and anxiety. It's often due to the high demand for specialist services coupled with a limited number of healthcare providers with expertise in neurodivergence. These long wait times can be particularly detrimental for individuals with ADHD who require timely support and adjustments in their treatment plans for optimal management of their condition.
According to a study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders, approximately 11% of Australian children aged 4-17 years old have been diagnosed with ADHD. This prevalence rate is higher than the global average of 5.3%, making it one of the most commonly diagnosed neurodevelopmental disorders in the country. Despite this, there is still a lack of understanding and support for individuals with ADHD in many healthcare settings.
Dr. Timms and Dr Nguyen are experienced in evaluating and treating both pediatric and adult patients who are suspected to have ADHD. They can initiate the assessment process and make referrals to psychiatrists or pediatricians when necessary. For patients who have achieved stability with medications, we can, in certain instances, assume the role of primary prescriber for ongoing medication management. Several of the GPs at KFMP/WFMP are happy to co-manage ADHD medication prescribing with the appropriate documentation and approvals from NSW health Please chat to your GP if this is suitable for you.
